AFCON 2025: Uzoho Declares Readiness for Super Eagles Return

Super Eagles goalkeeper Francis Uzoho has declared his readiness for international duty following his recall to the national team ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Uzoho was named among the three goalkeepers in Head Coach Eric Chelle’s 28-man squad, ending his absence from the Super Eagles after more than a year.

The goalkeeper last featured for Nigeria in a March 2024 international friendly against Ghana, missing subsequent competitive fixtures.

Speaking on his return to the squad, Uzoho expressed delight at rejoining the national team camp and reconnecting with familiar faces.

“I missed the boys and the camp vibe. We’ve shared challenges together and always check up on one another,” he said.

He described his recall as a moment of joy and fulfilment, reaffirming his commitment to representing Nigeria at the highest level.

“I felt an unexplainable joy. Coming back to represent Nigeria again is the most important thing for me,” Uzoho added.

The goalkeeper noted that invitations to the national team are based on preparedness and confidence from the technical crew.

“If you’re invited, it means you’re ready. The coaches and scouts know what they’re doing,” he said.

Addressing perceived competition with first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, Uzoho dismissed any rivalry, stressing the strong bond between them.

“Stanley is my brother. We support each other and share a very close relationship,” he said.

Nigeria will head into the 2025 AFCON aiming to improve on their runners-up finish at the previous edition.

The Super Eagles lost 2–1 to hosts Côte d’Ivoire in the final and will be chasing a fourth continental title, having previously won the tournament in 1980, 1994 and 2013.
