Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has welcomed Nigeria’s emphatic 4-0 triumph as a strong indication of the team’s ambition at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria dominated Mozambique with a commanding display marked by intensity, organisation and clinical finishing in their Round-of-16 encounter in Fès on Monday.
Victor Osimhen, who earned his 50th senior cap, scored twice, while Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams also found the net to send the Super Eagles into the quarter-finals of the 35th AFCON.
“I am pleased with this performance. Scoring four goals shows our intent and determination,” Chelle told reporters after the match.
The coach applauded his players’ overall display but cautioned that the result should not lead to complacency.
“I am proud of the players and happy with the way they played, but this is just one match,” he said.
Chelle also outlined the team’s next steps as preparations shift to the quarter-final stage.
“We will travel to Marrakech on Wednesday to get ready for a tough game against either Algeria or DR Congo,” he said.
The coach stressed the importance of maintaining high standards as the competition progresses.
“My responsibility is to keep the team ambitious, continue training hard, and sustain the intensity and aggressiveness,” he added.
He warned against losing focus after a big win, insisting there was still much work to be done.
“We have not achieved anything yet. Winning one game is not enough, and we must keep improving,” Chelle said.
On team discipline and unity, the coach maintained that internal issues would remain within the group.
“What happens on the pitch stays within the team. My job is to ensure the players remain focused,” he said.
Nigeria’s victory confirmed their place in the quarter-finals, where they will face either Algeria or DR Congo in Marrakech on Saturday.
