Former Super Eagles icon, Kanu Nwankwo, has announced that he, alongside Jay Jay Okocha, Finidi George, Daniel Amokachi and several other African football greats, will take part in the African Legends United Gala Match.
Kanu disclosed this while speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the African Continental Free Trade Area Festival (ACFTA Fest) held in Abuja on Thursday.
He described the African Legends United Gala Match, a major highlight of the festival, as a unique event that would bring together football legends from across the continent.
“It is happening in Nigeria, and the legends will be present. They will do what they know best, and everyone will enjoy the experience,” he said.
Kanu explained that their involvement in the project was aimed at promoting African culture and empowering grassroots development.
“When we talk about legends, they exist all over the world. But this one is special because it is about African legends. Being hosted in Nigeria, it will bring together stars from different parts of the continent.
“We want young people to grow up understanding their roots and thinking positively about Africa. It is also about supporting grassroots development.
“It is about giving back, which is why we all agreed to be part of this initiative. That is why myself, Jay Jay Okocha, Daniel Amokachi and others will be participating in the match on March 28,” he added.
Also speaking, former Cameroonian international, Eyond Enoh, said the ACFTA Fest would run from March 26 to March 28, with the Legends match scheduled for March 28 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
According to him, unity remains one of the key values of the event, noting that unity does not happen automatically but requires deliberate actions.
“You need initiatives to drive it. We have many projects and promises, but what matters most is taking action.
“The only difference between Cameroon and Nigeria is a colonial line. I don’t see myself just as a Cameroonian; I see myself as an African.
“This festival is meant to shift our focus from the lines that divide us to the ones that unite us. That is the spirit behind this initiative.
“It is one of the strongest platforms to promote African unity, and our motto remains one Africa, one market, one future,” he said.
The ACFTA Fest 2026 will feature a series of activities from March 26 to March 28, including startup exhibitions, cultural showcases, heritage programmes and the African Legends United Gala Match, which will serve as the grand finale.
