The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has bestowed the prestigious Yoruba chieftaincy title ‘Yeye Asiwaju Gbogbo Ile Oodua’ on Nigeria’s First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu.
The honour was conferred on Sunday during a colourful ceremony at the Palace Square in Ile-Ife, Osun State. The title, rich in historical significance, was previously held by the late Chief (Mrs.) Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo.
The event drew high-profile dignitaries, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who offered prayers for the Ooni and the First Lady, and the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, who commended Mrs. Tinubu for supporting efforts to improve national wellbeing.
Other attendees included former First Lady Patience Jonathan, as well as Governors Ademola Adeleke of Osun and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, who praised the Ooni’s decade of service and leadership.
Oba Ogunwusi said the First Lady earned the honour through her leadership, cultural influence and contributions to Yoruba society.
“This title recognises her commitment to uplifting our people and preserving our heritage,” he said.
Responding, Mrs. Tinubu expressed deep gratitude for the recognition.
“I appreciate this honour and thank Nigerians for continually supporting my husband,” she said.
The First Lady has received several traditional titles within the past year. In August, she was named Iya Oba of Ikorodu, and earlier became Ugosimba I of Enugu for her humanitarian work. She also holds the Sarauniyar Yaki title in Gombe in recognition of her advocacy for vulnerable groups.
The ceremony featured rich cultural performances and traditional displays and formed part of events marking the Ooni’s 10th coronation anniversary, which attracted dignitaries from across the country.
