Mrs Seun Aiyedatiwa, Wife of the Ondo State Governor, has inaugurated the maiden edition of the women’s pre-season football event tagged “Ondo First Lady Pre-Season Tournament.”
Speaking at the opening ceremony on Monday in Akure, Aiyedatiwa described football as not just a sport but an avenue for women’s empowerment and growth in sports.
Represented by the Wife of the Deputy Governor, Dr Abosede Adelami, she said that participation in sports helps to build teamwork, discipline, and resilience among young women.
She noted that football also creates opportunities, breaks barriers, and demonstrates determination and support for women striving to excel.
According to her, the tournament aligns with broader initiatives to promote the girl-child agenda aimed at raising confident, disciplined, and goal-oriented young women.
“Sports, especially football, remains a strong tool for character development and creating meaningful life opportunities.
“I commend the Ondo State Football Agency and sponsors for their dedication to developing women’s football in the state.
“By creating this platform, you are empowering our young women to display their skills, gain confidence, and prepare for the upcoming football season,” she said.
Aiyedatiwa reaffirmed that the administration of Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa remains committed to gender equality, youth empowerment, and sporting excellence.
She encouraged all teams to uphold fair play and sportsmanship throughout the competition.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA), Mr Divine Ogbonnaya, said the pre-season tournament would help Sunshine Queens Football Club prepare for the Nigeria Women Football League.
He explained that it would also allow coaches and technical crews to assess players’ performance and strengthen the squad ahead of the new season.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Sunshine Queens of Akure triumphed over Braveheart’s Ladies of Benin, winning 2–0 in the opening match of the six-team tournament.
