House Minority Caucus Calls for Swift Economic, Political Reforms

The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has urged immediate reforms in Nigeria’s governance and economy, stressing that such steps are necessary to resolve long-standing national problems and secure lasting growth.

Minority Leader, Rep. Kingsley Chinda (PDP–Rivers), made the appeal in a statement in Abuja as the nation marked its 65th independence anniversary.

He explained that the anniversary should not be viewed only as a celebration but also as a time for sober reflection.

Chinda stressed that national resources must be allocated fairly to benefit all Nigerians, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or region.

“We must face the uncomfortable truth that our political and economic structures need deliberate and timely reforms.

“We must be fair, frank, and firm. It is only when we are true and factual about our state of nationhood that the country can wriggle out of stymied development towards achieving her full potentials as a prosperous country.

“Indeed, as a nation, we face issues of governance and a lack of inclusive economic growth that has left vast segments of our population trapped in poverty.

“The recurring problems of insecurity, hunger, youth unemployment and infrastructure deficits are persistent obstacles to our nation’s development.

“The ideals of equity, fairness and justice, which should bind us together, are sadly, being strained, resulting in divisions that threaten national cohesion and development,” he said.

Chinda also honoured the sacrifices of Nigeria’s founding fathers and past leaders who fought for independence.

He appealed to leaders across all levels of government to uphold accountability and commit to policies that truly serve the people, noting that building a strong nation is a shared responsibility.

The lawmaker further called on citizens to embrace unity and peace, stressing that diversity should be seen as an asset rather than a weakness.

He concluded by urging Nigerians to stay hopeful and committed to a brighter future, emphasising that collective effort and solidarity are the only ways to overcome current difficulties. He said the country can rise above its present challenges and move closer to the vision of its founding fathers.
