Kaduna, June 2, 2026 — Women leaders and advocacy organisations have stepped up efforts to encourage broader support for female political aspirants ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging women across the country to unite in advancing gender inclusion in governance.
They called on women to set aside political, ethnic and religious differences and rally behind qualified female candidates seeking elective positions.
The National President of the Women Wing of the Peace Revival and Reconciliation Foundation of Nigeria, Hajiya Ramatu Tijjani, made the appeal during an interaction with journalists in Kaduna.
Tijjani congratulated women who secured victories in their various party primaries and encouraged Nigerian women to support female contestants irrespective of their political platforms.
She noted that greater female representation in public office would strengthen democratic institutions, promote inclusive leadership and contribute to national growth.
According to her, several countries across Africa and other parts of the world have successfully elevated women to prominent leadership positions, including the presidency, stressing that Nigeria should make similar progress in empowering women politically.
She observed that women make up a substantial portion of the nation’s population and electorate, adding that collective support among women could significantly improve the chances of female candidates at the polls.
Tijjani urged women to actively participate in the electoral process by voting for capable female aspirants, describing women as effective leaders who have consistently demonstrated commitment and accountability in public service.
She disclosed that preparations were underway for the launch of a “Women for Women” campaign aimed at mobilising support, advocacy and resources for female candidates who emerge from party primaries ahead of the elections.
The women leader further stated that increasing the number of women in political offices would help address issues such as poverty, unemployment and limited access to education, particularly among women and girls.
In a related development, the Chairperson of Jam’iyyar Matan Arewa, Hajiya Rabi Saulawa, expressed concern over the relatively small number of women who won tickets during the recently concluded party primaries.
She urged women nationwide to provide moral and electoral support to female aspirants, noting that solidarity among women remains key to achieving meaningful representation in governance.
Also speaking, former Kaduna State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hajiya Hafsat Baba, revealed plans to organise capacity-building programmes for female candidates, particularly those contesting under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
She congratulated successful female aspirants and pledged continued support through mentorship and training initiatives designed to strengthen their leadership, communication and campaign management abilities.
The stakeholders maintained that expanding women’s participation in politics is vital for inclusive governance and remains an important step toward sustainable development and national advancement.
