The Alumni Association of the National Institute (AANI) has congratulated Nigerians on the country’s 65th Independence anniversary, urging both citizens and leaders to use the occasion not only for celebration but also for sober reflection.
In a statement signed by its President, Ambassador Emmanuel Okafor, the association described Nigeria’s post-independence journey as one defined by resilience, diversity, and an enduring national spirit.
Okafor acknowledged that while the country has made notable progress over the years, persistent challenges—particularly insecurity and disunity—demand renewed national focus and joint efforts from all stakeholders.
He commended the sacrifices of the military, security agencies, and law enforcement officers in combating insurgency, banditry, terrorism, and other threats, but emphasized the need for more innovative strategies to achieve lasting peace.
According to him, safeguarding the lives and welfare of citizens must remain a top priority at all levels of government, as national security is the foundation of unity, development, and prosperity. “Security is not the sole responsibility of government; it requires the active participation of citizens, institutions, and stakeholders alike,” he said.
The association further called on Nigerians to rise above ethnic, religious, and political divides, embracing values such as patriotism, integrity, and service to the common good.
“At 65, our unity remains our greatest strength. With collective resolve, we can overcome the forces threatening our peace and chart a future worthy of the dreams of our founding fathers,” Okafor added.
He concluded with prayers for continued divine guidance for the nation’s leaders and lasting peace and progress for Nigeria.
