AIG Omolabi: Police Now More Civil, Professional in Community Relations

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 17, covering Ondo and Ekiti States, Mr. Ajani Omolabi, says the Nigeria Police Force has adopted a more civil approach in its dealings with the public to enhance modern policing.

Speaking in Akure on Sunday, Omolabi explained that this shift in attitude has improved trust between officers and citizens, making it easier to obtain vital information needed to combat crime.

“The police are no longer bossy in their approach. We have become more civil and closer to the people we serve. This openness has helped us gain their confidence and gather information more easily,” he said.

The AIG noted that several seminars and training sessions had been held with officers and men in Ondo and Ekiti commands to reinforce the values of transparency, professionalism, and community engagement.

He urged community members to report directly to Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), Commissioners of Police, or even his office, assuring that anyone providing information would be protected.

Omolabi reiterated that the police must be seen as partners and friends of the people rather than adversaries. He added that his office operates an open-door policy where citizens can freely lodge complaints or grievances.

On capacity building, he praised the police institution for encouraging personnel to pursue higher education, particularly in law, to strengthen prosecution and improve professionalism.

“We now have experts in law who understand the importance of evidence in investigations and prosecutions. This has helped us reduce the number of cases lost in court,” he explained.

He further emphasized the police force’s zero tolerance for misconduct and indiscipline among its ranks.

“We don’t shield anyone. When officers—whether junior or senior—misconduct themselves, we apply the appropriate rules and sanctions. At the same time, those who perform well are recognized, promoted, or rewarded to motivate others,” Omolabi said.
