FEMinWASH Inaugurates Kano Chapter

The Kano State chapter of the Network of Female Professionals in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Nigeria (FEMinWASH) has been officially inaugurated through a partnership between the network and Self Help Africa.The inauguration, which took place on Saturday, was preceded by a two-day stakeholder workshop focused on integrating gender perspectives into the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) sector. The event gathered government officials, development partners, and WASH professionals.Key activities during the workshop included the presentation of findings from a WASH assessment, training on gender-transformative programming, and the development of a practical gender action plan to steer the new chapter’s initiatives.Dr. Boluwaji Onabolu, President and Convener of FEMinWASH, stated that the initiative is designed to amplify the influence of women in the WASH sector and create greater pathways to leadership positions. She extended commendation to Self Help Africa for its support of gender-responsive programs across the country.In his remarks, Mr. John Wali, Programme Manager at Self Help Africa, called on the state government and other stakeholders to endorse the initiative to ensure inclusive and sustainable water and sanitation services.Representing the state government, the Permanent Secretary of the Kano State Ministry of Water Resources, Alhaji Abdurrazaq Abdullahi, pledged the ministry’s full support, describing the collaboration as a timely effort to enhance service delivery.The newly appointed State Coordinator, Hajiya Umma Muhammad, noted that the chapter’s launch opens new avenues for women to assume active roles in advancing WASH development throughout Kano State. She added that the workshop provided a platform for participants to review WASH assessment rankings, undergo training on gender equity, and formulate a targeted gender action plan.
