Authorities in Ogun State have launched an investigation into the death of a student of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, who was reportedly shot during an attack by suspected armed robbers in the early hours of Thursday.
The spokesperson of the Ogun State Police Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this while speaking with journalists in Abeokuta.
According to him, police officers swiftly responded after receiving reports of the incident and have since begun efforts to track down and arrest those responsible.
Babaseyi expressed sympathy to the bereaved family and the university community, assuring them that security agencies were committed to ensuring the perpetrators are brought to justice.
In response to the tragic incident, the university management suspended lectures for the day to allow students and staff to mourn the deceased.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the institution’s Deputy Registrar, Corporate Affairs Division, Niyi Oduwole.
Oduwole stated that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ayodeji Agboola, approved the decision following endorsement by the university Senate.
He explained that the gesture was intended to provide members of the university community the opportunity to grieve their late colleague.
The management also conveyed its condolences to the family of the deceased and pledged to strengthen security measures through collaboration with relevant law enforcement agencies.
Students were urged to remain peaceful and avoid actions capable of heightening tensions, while the university assured them of continued support as the community copes with the loss.
