Lagos Mainland Reconstructs Road to Tackle Persistent Flooding

Lagos, June 6, 2026 – The Lagos Mainland Local Government Area has commenced the reconstruction of the 1.5-kilometre Jebba-Osholake Road in Ebute Metta, a project aimed at resolving persistent flooding challenges and improving living conditions in the community.

At the inauguration ceremony on Saturday, the Executive Chairman of the council, Mr. Jubril Emilagba, explained that the intervention was designed to enhance drainage capacity and reduce the recurring impact of heavy rainfall in the area.

He noted that the project was initiated following repeated appeals from residents in January, who had long expressed concerns over years of flooding that disrupted daily activities, transport and economic activities.

According to Emilagba, the road rehabilitation reflects his administration’s commitment to responsive governance and infrastructural development targeted at improving residents’ welfare.

He said the initiative marked a shift toward delivering tangible results, stressing that the administration remained focused on projects that directly impact communities.

The chairman added that beyond the Jebba-Osholake Road, the council had also inaugurated a reconstructed box culvert at Osholake Street by Glover Street, describing it as a critical drainage intervention to protect the area from water overflow.

He highlighted other completed and ongoing projects, including the renovation of U.N.A Primary School, flood-control works at Kadara Primary School, and the installation of solar-powered streetlights in various parts of the local government.

Emilagba further disclosed that work was ongoing on Oroku Road by Apapa Road, while drainage construction had commenced on Freeman Street near Ibadan Street.

He also announced the upgrade of the Odaliki Police Post to a full police station, saying the move was part of efforts to strengthen security within the council area.

In addition, he said operational vehicles, including Korope buses, had been provided to support security agencies and other stakeholders.

The council chairman revealed plans for new development projects, including the construction of a council complex, an ICT centre at Oroku Street, and a mini stadium at Oroku Primary School.

He urged residents to support environmental cleanliness, warning against indiscriminate waste disposal and the discharge of used oil into drainage channels by mechanics, noting that such practices worsen flooding problems.

The Council Manager, Mr. Olufemi Ojukutu, said the reconstructed road would improve accessibility and ease movement for residents, traders and businesses in the area.

He expressed optimism that the project would serve as a model for future urban renewal efforts within Lagos Mainland.

The contractor handling the project, Alhaji Mukaila Olabisi, said the road reconstruction contract was awarded in August 2025 and completed within the agreed timeline, while confirming that additional projects under his company were nearing completion.

Community leaders, traders and residents who attended the event welcomed the development, expressing confidence that the new infrastructure would significantly reduce flooding and improve environmental conditions in the area.
