Kaduna, June 4, 2026 — A nursing mother, Rahma Adamu, on Thursday approached a Shari’a Court sitting in Magajin Gari, Kaduna, seeking the dissolution of her marriage to her husband, Murtala Abdullahi.
Adamu told the court that she was no longer interested in the marriage and asked that it be terminated through Khul’i, an Islamic form of divorce in which a wife returns the bride price in exchange for separation.
She informed the court that her bride price was N150,000, which she was prepared to refund in order to end the union.
Counsel to the respondent, Muhammad Abdullahi, objected to the claim, stating that the actual dowry paid at the time of marriage was N200,000. He requested a two-week adjournment to allow for possible reconciliation between both parties.
However, the complainant’s lawyer, Halima Umar, maintained that her client was not open to reconciliation and was willing to return the N200,000 if required by the court.
Delivering his ruling, Judge Mu’awiyya Shehu dismissed the request for adjournment, noting that under Islamic law, a woman seeking Khul’i is permitted to return the dowry and exit the marriage if she so desires.
The judge explained that the court would not compel the complainant to remain in a marriage she no longer wished to continue, in order to prevent further dispute between both parties.
He subsequently dissolved the marriage and ordered Adamu to refund the agreed bride price without delay.
