Xenophobic violence: NANS threatens action against South African companies

Ibadan, May 6, 2026 . The South-West Zone D of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a warning of possible peaceful demonstrations and picketing of South African-owned companies operating in Nigeria in response to recent xenophobic violence in South Africa.

This was made known in a statement released on Wednesday in Ibadan by the zone’s coordinator, Mr. Kayode Adeyemo.

Adeyemo condemned what he described as a renewed surge of attacks, alleging that two Nigerians were among those killed.

He said the incidents reflect a continuing pattern of hostility against Nigerians in South Africa, stressing that such actions are unacceptable and must be urgently addressed.

He added that the student body is already mobilising members for coordinated peaceful protests and advocacy actions targeting South African businesses within Nigeria.

According to him, it is unfair for foreign companies to continue to benefit from operations in Nigeria while Nigerians are exposed to violent attacks abroad.

He maintained that the situation presents a moral contradiction that can no longer be ignored.

Adeyemo urged the South African authorities to strengthen protection for foreign nationals and ensure that those responsible for the attacks are brought to justice.

He also noted that NANS remains willing to engage in dialogue with relevant stakeholders, including diplomatic representatives and corporate bodies, to find a lasting solution.

He emphasized that Nigerian students would not remain silent in the face of threats to the safety and dignity of their compatriots abroad.
