The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Kaduna State, working with the state judiciary, has intensified enforcement efforts to tackle overloading and improve safety along the Kaduna–Abuja highway.
Sector Commander, Corps Commander Andrew Longkam, said on Thursday in Kaduna that the operation was introduced in response to the frequent cases of overloading linked to deadly road accidents on the route.
He explained that the joint exercise was specifically designed to address persistent violations, particularly along the Zuba–Kaduna corridor, where overcrowded vehicles have contributed to high casualty rates.
Longkam noted that many commercial drivers exceed approved passenger limits, thereby increasing the severity of crashes when they occur.
He pointed out that vehicles built for four passengers are often overloaded with up to nine occupants, while those meant for seven sometimes carry as many as 15.
According to him, the intervention focuses on major traffic offences known to cause fatal accidents, adding that enforcement would be continuous.
He assured that the initiative would not only involve arrests but also awareness campaigns in motor parks, religious centres, and other public spaces to educate road users.
The sector commander disclosed that 18 motorists had already been apprehended during the exercise.
He said 10 of them were penalised for overloading, while others were cited for offences such as defective tyres and improper number plates.
Longkam urged drivers to comply with traffic regulations, stressing that most road crashes result from avoidable violations.
He advised motorists to avoid overloading, speeding, and driving under the influence, while ensuring their vehicles are in good condition before embarking on trips.
He expressed confidence that sustained enforcement combined with public education would help reduce accidents and improve safety on the highway.
The corps reaffirmed its commitment to safer roads through strict monitoring and continuous engagement with road users.
