Entrepreneur highlights rapid transformation in Nigeria’s fashion industry

Nigeria’s fashion scene is undergoing a major transformation, powered by youthful talent, improved technology, and rising global demand for African-inspired designs.

Founder of Cossly Wears, Ibrahim Akosile, shared this insight during an interview in Lagos on Tuesday, reflecting on over a decade of experience in the industry.

He observed that the sector has evolved from small-scale tailoring into a dynamic space capable of delivering internationally competitive designs.

“The industry is buzzing with creativity. There’s a surge of fresh talent and innovative ideas,” he said.

Akosile explained that access to modern tools, quality fabrics, and accessories has enabled local designers to break beyond domestic markets and gain global relevance.

He noted that Nigerian creatives are now producing high-quality pieces that can stand alongside leading international brands.

The entrepreneur added that his personal journey mirrors the broader growth within the industry.

He began as a student entrepreneur, taking customer orders and outsourcing production to tailors before gradually setting up a small workshop at home after graduation.

Over time, the business expanded into a fully structured fashion enterprise with its own production facility, fabric retail unit, and embroidery section.

He identified quality control as a major challenge in the early stages, particularly when relying on external tailors, which later informed his decision to internalise production processes.

“In the early days, managing quality and delivery timelines was difficult, so I invested in building my own production system,” he said.

Despite the industry’s progress, Akosile pointed out that challenges such as inconsistent power supply and poor logistics continue to limit efficiency.

He stressed that improved infrastructure would allow designers to focus more on creativity rather than operational constraints.

Nonetheless, he noted that Nigerian fashion continues to gain international attention, driven by its unique blend of traditional elements and contemporary styles.

He added that Cossly Wears has diversified from producing custom kaftans to offering premium suits, modern outfits, and refined native wear.

According to him, strict quality assurance remains central to the brand’s operations, with multiple checks carried out at every stage of production.

Looking ahead, Akosile said the company plans to scale its ready-to-wear line, expand manufacturing capacity, and support other designers through fabric and embroidery services.

He expressed confidence that with sustained innovation and better infrastructure, Nigeria’s fashion industry will continue to strengthen its position on the global stage.
