Shettima, others commend Fintiri, supporters for defection to APC

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has described the defection of Adamawa Governor Ahmadu Fintiri and his supporters to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening national development.

Shettima made the remarks on Monday in Yola while formally welcoming the governor and his allies into the ruling party on behalf of President Bola Tinubu.

He noted that the governor’s move underscores the responsibility of political leaders to make decisions that reinforce democratic institutions and promote stability.

According to him, the new entrants are aligning with a governance vision that prioritises the welfare and aspirations of Nigerians.

The vice-president emphasised that the APC sees political power as a duty to serve, rather than an end in itself.

He warmly received the governor and his supporters, describing them as partners in a shared mission to build a functional nation, strengthen democracy, and deliver meaningful progress.

Shettima also described democracy as a system where ideas are tested and the will of the people ultimately prevails, adding that the ruling party has demonstrated progressive leadership under the current administration.

He said the growing number of defections into the APC reflects public confidence in the party’s structure, direction, and governance approach.

The vice-president added that the party would benefit from the experience and fresh perspectives of new members, noting that political organisations must evolve and embrace diverse ideas to remain relevant.

He further commended Fintiri’s performance in Adamawa, pointing to visible improvements in infrastructure and public services as evidence of effective leadership.

Also speaking, APC National Chairman, Nantawe Yilwatda, praised the governor’s achievements across key sectors, including education and healthcare, describing his move as a welcome addition to the party.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, represented by Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, commended the decision, noting that it positions the state more firmly within mainstream national politics.

Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum, Hope Uzodimma, said the development would further accelerate growth in Adamawa, describing the APC as a results-driven platform anchored on the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

In his response, Fintiri said his decision to join the ruling party was informed by the need to support policies he believes are yielding positive outcomes for the country.

He expressed confidence in the current administration’s economic direction, stating that recent reforms have placed Nigeria on a path of recovery.

The governor assured party members of strong support ahead of future elections, pledging to mobilise for victory in 2027.

A key moment at the event was the presentation of the APC flag to Fintiri as the party leader in Adamawa State.

Shortly after the ceremony, Shettima paid a courtesy visit to the Lamido of Adamawa, Barkindo Musdafa, where he reiterated the administration’s commitment to preserving traditional institutions.

In response, the monarch commended the leadership of the president and vice-president, acknowledging their efforts toward national development.
