The Nigerian Army has launched a three-day social media awareness campaign to promote cybersecurity awareness and responsible online conduct among its personnel.
The programme, organised by the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command, is taking place at the Lt.-Gen. T.A. Lagbaja Hall, Ribadu Cantonment, from March 24 to March 26.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division, Maj.-Gen. Abubakar Wase, said the initiative aims to equip officers and soldiers with the skills needed to navigate the evolving digital landscape.
Represented by the Deputy Chief of Staff, Administration, Col. Ikechukwu Akabike, Wase noted that social media now plays a significant role in shaping public perception, influencing security environments, and affecting military operations.
He emphasised that a proper understanding of both the benefits and risks associated with digital platforms is crucial to protecting national security and maintaining institutional credibility.
According to him, the campaign will cover areas such as the influence of social media on military activities, managing digital footprints, cybersecurity practices, and the role of online platforms in national defence.
He described social media as a powerful tool that must be handled with caution, as it can support communication and intelligence gathering but also expose vulnerabilities if misused.
Wase encouraged participants to take full advantage of the sessions by engaging experts and gaining practical knowledge to enhance their professional effectiveness.
He also praised the Cyber Warfare Command for its efforts in promoting safe digital practices within the force.
The GOC stressed the importance of continuous learning in adapting to emerging technological trends, noting that the knowledge gained would strengthen both individual capacity and overall operational performance.
He expressed confidence that the initiative would help build a more alert, informed, and digitally secure military workforce.
The campaign forms part of broader efforts by the Nigerian Army to incorporate modern cyber strategies into its operations, with activities including lectures and interactive sessions designed to deepen participants’ understanding of digital security.
