Yam Festival: Traditional Ruler Highlights Symbol of Strength and Communal Unity

The Traditional Ruler of Ediba community in Abi Local Government Area of Cross River has described yam as more than just food for his people, calling it a symbol of strength, communal spirit, survival, and gratitude.

Speaking on Monday during the 2025 New Yam Festival themed “Enduring Peace for Sustainable Development”, the monarch commended local farmers, cultural groups, and organisers for sustaining the celebration. He reaffirmed that the future of Ediba lies in its strong cultural heritage and commitment to agriculture.

“Let the New Yam Festival serve as a reminder that our strength comes from the land and the hands that work it,” he said.

Ettah Osu, President of the Ediba Union Worldwide, described the festival as a beacon of unity and a reminder of shared heritage. He urged young people to actively contribute to community growth, sustainability, and peace, stressing that unity was key to progress.

Event Chairman Freedom Ejom spoke on the theme, highlighting agriculture’s role in economic resilience and youth empowerment. He encouraged young people to embrace the cultivation of cash crops such as cocoa, oil palm, and coffee, in line with agricultural initiatives reintroduced by Governor Bassey Otu’s administration.

Ejom also advised youths to acquire vocational skills such as plumbing and electrical work to diversify income sources.

“With the right skills and government support, our youths can harness the vast potential of our fertile land to improve their economic standing,” he said. He further commended farmers’ resilience and praised the community for enjoying five years of uninterrupted peace.

Dr. Rita Akpan, Chairperson of the Organising Committee, noted that the New Yam Festival had become a driver of local economic activity. According to her, the celebration attracts visitors from across Nigeria, boosts trade, and provides opportunities for farmers and artisans.

The event featured cultural music, traditional dances, and craft exhibitions by the people of Ediba and neighbouring communities.
