UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen Resigns After Six Years in Post

The United Nations has confirmed that Geir Pedersen, its Special Envoy for Syria, has submitted his resignation after more than six and a half years in the role.

The 69-year-old Norwegian diplomat informed UN Secretary-General António Guterres of his decision to step down for personal reasons, a UN statement said on Friday. Guterres accepted his request, noting that Pedersen will continue carrying out his responsibilities until his departure date.

Pedersen was appointed to lead UN efforts in Syria following the ousting of long-time leader Bashar al-Assad in late 2024. His mandate included supporting state institutions under the Islamist-led transitional government, facilitating talks on a new constitution, and advancing political dialogue under a UN resolution.

In March, he voiced alarm over violent clashes between security forces and Assad loyalists, urging protection for civilians. Throughout his tenure, Pedersen worked to mediate political processes, oversee humanitarian coordination, and rally international backing for reconstruction efforts.

Addressing the UN Security Council earlier this year, he remarked: “Today, Syria and the Syrian people have a new dawn, and we must ensure this becomes a bright day. They deserve this so much.”

Pedersen also expressed deep gratitude to Syrians for their resilience and humanity throughout years of conflict.
