UN Must Respond to Rising Global Tensions — Nigerian Envoy

New York, May 12, 2026 Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, has urged the international community to take swift and coordinated action against growing geopolitical instability, the spread of weapons and evolving security risks across the globe.

Speaking during a visit by participants from the United States Army War College to Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the UN in New York, Ibrahim stressed the need for the United Nations to take a more proactive stance in addressing escalating global rivalries and security concerns.

He warned that rapid advances in artificial intelligence, cyber warfare, drones and autonomous weapons systems were creating new challenges for global arms control and security regulation.

According to him, emerging technologies are making it increasingly difficult for governments and international institutions to monitor and enforce arms limitations effectively. He added that military organisations worldwide must adapt quickly to the changing security environment.

Ibrahim noted that President Bola Tinubu remains committed to enhancing Nigeria’s military strength through increased funding, better welfare packages for personnel and stronger international cooperation.

He said the administration was focused on modernising military operations, supporting troops and exploring innovative security strategies.

The ambassador described the visit by the War College delegation as a sign of the longstanding strategic partnership between Nigeria and the United States in promoting international peace and stability.

He praised the institution for training military leaders capable of handling modern security and conflict challenges, while also highlighting the accomplishments of Nigerian officers who studied there.

Among the notable Nigerian alumni he mentioned were former President Muhammadu Buhari, former Chief of Army Staff Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, Brig.-Gen. Olakunle Nafiu and Col. Charles Nengite.

Ibrahim particularly applauded Nengite for becoming the institution’s top international graduate, ending a 38-year gap in the achievement. He said the accomplishments of Nigerian officers reflected the professionalism and resilience of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

The envoy also welcomed the participation of Col. Timothy Ajato of the Nigerian Army in the visiting delegation.

He explained that Nigeria was deepening its diplomatic engagement at the UN in line with Tinubu’s agenda of promoting peace, innovation, security and investment through international collaboration.

According to Ibrahim, the country’s foreign policy priorities remain centred on development, democratic growth, diaspora relations and harnessing its demographic potential.

He also expressed optimism about Nigeria’s economic outlook, referencing positive assessments contained in recent global economic reports by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

Ibrahim, who holds a doctorate in Modern War Studies from the University of Buckingham, described the delegation’s visit as the first official engagement he had hosted since assuming office as Nigeria’s representative to the UN.

Earlier, Prof. John Hagl, leader of the U.S. Army War College delegation, praised Nigeria’s contributions to the United Nations and commended Nigerian participants in the institution’s programmes for their leadership, professionalism and strong representation of the country’s values and culture.
