UN Expresses Concern Over Attacks on Nigerian Schools, Pledges Support

The United Nations has expressed serious concern over repeated attacks on schools in Nigeria, warning about the growing threat to students and educational facilities.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric conveyed this position while responding to questions from the News Agency of Nigeria regarding recent coordinated assaults on schools in the country.

Reports indicate that armed groups invaded schools in Oyo State over the weekend, abducting several pupils and teachers, while at least two teachers were reportedly killed during the incident.

Dujarric said the UN was deeply troubled by the continued targeting of children and learning institutions by extremist groups, noting that such incidents have devastating effects on affected communities.

He added that UN Secretary-General António Guterres is also following developments closely, especially in light of recent joint military operations by the United States and Nigeria against ISIS-linked targets in the country.

According to him, the UN system in Nigeria is already working with government authorities in affected areas to strengthen protection for schools and improve safety for students.

He explained that efforts are ongoing to develop measures that will make schools more secure and reduce the risk of future attacks.

The UN reaffirmed its commitment to continue supporting initiatives aimed at safeguarding education and protecting vulnerable communities in Nigeria.
