Tyla wins top afrobeats award at 2024 Billboard Music Awards

South African singer Tyla has won two prestigious awards at the 2024 Billboard Music Awards, held on Thursday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Tyla secured two major victories in the Afrobeats categories, outshining Nigerian music giants Burna Boy, Rema, Tems, and Asake. .

The rising star won “Top Afrobeats Song” for her global hit “Water” and also took home the “Top Afrobeats Artist” title.

These accolades add to Tyla’s impressive year, which has seen her dominate the international Afrobeats scene with a total of eight nominations at the Billboard awards.

Since the start of 2024, Tyla has consistently outperformed some of Africa’s biggest music names.

In September, she won “Best Afrobeats Music Video” at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), also for “Water,” surpassing competition from Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, and Tems.

Earlier in February, the song earned her the inaugural Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance, marking yet another significant milestone in her burgeoning career.

Meanwhile, singer-songwriter Taylor Swift further solidified her legacy as the most decorated artist in Billboard Music Awards history.

She took home ten awards, including ‘Top Artist,’ ‘Top Billboard 200 Album,’ and ‘Top Hot 100 Songwriter,’ out of her 16 nominations.
