Two Banks Face Lawsuit from Businessman Over Deceased Father’s Account

A businessman, Shamsuddeen Bello, has dragged First Bank and Jaiz Bank before the Upper Shari’a Court in Kaduna over the savings left behind by his late father.

Bello, represented by his lawyer, Jamilu Sulaiman, explained that the person originally listed as next of kin to the deceased could not be traced. As a result, the family resolved to appoint him as the new next of kin to manage the estate.

He urged the court to compel both banks to release the funds so the family could distribute the inheritance in line with Shari’a law.

Neither of the defendant banks appeared in court nor sent legal representatives.

Presiding judge, Malam Auwal Abdullahi, granted the request filed by the complainant’s counsel. He directed the two banks to compile and present the account balances of the deceased. The matter was adjourned until September 23 for a compliance report.
