Trump Reaffirms U.S. Commitment to the United Nations Despite Criticism

U.S. President Donald Trump has reiterated his country’s strong support for the United Nations, saying Washington stands “100 percent” behind the global body, even as he voiced sharp criticism of its performance in certain areas.

Trump made the remarks during a bilateral meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres in New York, shortly after addressing world leaders at the UN General Assembly.

In his national statement, Trump faulted the UN for its handling of conflicts, migration, and climate-related challenges. However, he emphasized that his criticisms do not diminish America’s backing of the institution.

“Our country is behind the United Nations one hundred percent,” Trump said. “The potential of this organization is incredible—it can achieve so much for peace. While I may disagree at times, I remain fully committed to supporting it.”

He also thanked Guterres and UN staff for their hospitality, joking about a malfunctioning escalator and a technical issue with his teleprompter during his speech.

“It’s always an honor to be here,” Trump added. “Your people have treated us with great respect.”

In response, Secretary-General Guterres underscored the United States’ vital role in the UN’s founding and its decades of political and financial support. He praised Trump’s efforts to promote peace around the world, noting his attempts to secure ceasefires and reduce tensions in various regions.

“The engagement of the United States is absolutely essential,” Guterres said. “We value your commitment to peace and your willingness to work with us to ease the suffering of millions of people worldwide.”
