Tinubu pays tribute to labour icon Abiodun Aremu

President Bola Tinubu has extended his condolences to Nigeria’s labour movement and civil society following the death of veteran unionist and rights activist, Comrade Abiodun Aremu

Aremu passed away on Sunday in Ota, Ogun State. He was highly respected for his decades of dedication to labour advocacy and human rights.

In a statement released by his spokesperson, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed sympathy to Aremu’s family, friends, and colleagues over the loss.

The president described Aremu as a steadfast champion of workers’ rights, who devoted his life to the pursuit of dignity, justice, and equity in Nigeria.

He also conveyed his sympathies to the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and the wider civil society organizations.

Tinubu noted that Aremu’s passing is a significant loss to all who shared his vision for a fairer and more just society.

“He was a courageous comrade who stood firm in his convictions and never hesitated in defending the oppressed,” the president said.

“Aremu was a teacher, an organiser, and a moral compass for the people. He influenced minds and inspired generations of Nigerians with his commitment to integrity, justice, and patriotism.

“The nation has lost a selfless patriot and an indefatigable fighter for the common good,” he added.

President Tinubu prayed for the peaceful repose of Aremu’s soul and sought strength for his family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Comrade Abiodun Aremu, aged 65, was the Secretary of the Joint Action Front (JAF), an umbrella group for pro-labour civil society organizations. He reportedly died after being hit by a vehicle while crossing the road near his residence in Ota, Ogun State, on Sunday evening.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital where medical staff attempted resuscitation, but he was later pronounced dead.
