Tanzania to Host Inaugural Global Symposium on Artemisia

Arusha, Tanzania, is set to welcome international delegates on Oct. 8, 2025, for the maiden International Symposium on Artemisia, bringing together scientists, policymakers, and practitioners to examine the plant’s health, agricultural, and environmental value.

Mr. Arnaud Nouvion, the symposium’s co-convener, disclosed during a webinar on Friday that the gathering would provide a unique platform to showcase Artemisia’s medicinal, ecological, and agricultural contributions—particularly in malaria prevention, biodiversity protection, and climate adaptation.

He said participants are expected from Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas to present new research findings, exchange best practices, and deliberate on policy frameworks for integrating Artemisia into health systems and environmental programmes.

The event, he added, would also strengthen cooperation between governments, universities, and traditional medicine practitioners in advancing evidence-based use of the plant.

According to him, the symposium represents an important milestone in positioning Africa as a center for knowledge exchange and policy leadership on Artemisia and its role in sustainable development.

The conference is being co-organised by the Aga Khan Foundation, the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS), Aga Khan University’s Arusha Climate and Environmental Research Centre (AKU-ACER), and Maison de l’Artemisia.

Nouvion noted that it would feature the latest scientific work on the plant, covering its relevance to human health, agriculture, and climate solutions.

He explained that discussions will also cover its applications in malaria treatment, tuberculosis and schistosomiasis management, livestock health, and sustainable farming practices.

The organisers said the symposium will not only spotlight Artemisia’s proven role in combating malaria but also explore its wider potential as a tool for global health security, ecological balance, and food system resilience.
