Nigerians living in South Africa have rallied in large numbers to show their backing for the Super Eagles as they take on the Bafana Bafana in today’s FIFA World Cup qualifier in Bloemfontein.
Dr. Frank Onyekwelu, President-General of the Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa (NICASA), revealed this in a telephone interview on Tuesday from Lagos.
He explained that the association had mobilised members of the Nigerian community in South Africa to turn out in full strength to cheer the national team during the crucial encounter.
Onyekwelu further stated that, in the past weeks, NICASA has worked closely with the Nigerian Consulate in South Africa to enlighten Nigerians on the importance of rallying behind the Super Eagles.
He added that while matches between Nigeria and South Africa are often highly charged, the association has been encouraging fans to maintain calm and demonstrate unity.
According to him, the union has also been promoting the principle of “Mbotu” a spirit of African openness and solidarity to strengthen harmony among supporters.
He said members have been urged to remain law-abiding, patriotic, and tolerant throughout the build-up and during the game.
NICASA, he continued, has also coordinated with local law enforcement agencies to ensure safety and prevent disturbances before, during, and after the match.
He expressed optimism in the Super Eagles’ readiness, assuring that the Nigerian community in South Africa will provide overwhelming encouragement from the stands.
Onyekwelu stressed that their presence and chants will energise the team, boosting their confidence to secure victory on the field.
Nigeria goes into the fixture with 10 points after defeating Rwanda 1–0 on Saturday, just one point behind second-placed Benin, while South Africa leads the group with 16 points following their 3–0 win against Lesotho.
