Super Eagles Battle Algeria for AFCON 2025 Semi-Final Spot in Marrakech

Nigeria’s Super Eagles will take centre stage on Saturday in Marrakech as they chase a semi-final place at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in a high-profile quarter-final clash against Algeria.

Three-time champions Nigeria face the 2019 winners at the 45,000-capacity Grand Stade de Marrakech, with pride, history and momentum on the line as the tournament enters its decisive phase.

Both sides progressed from the group stage with perfect records, making them the only teams to achieve the feat. However, knockout football offers no room for past accomplishments.

Nigeria arrived as tournament favourites after scoring 12 goals and conceding four, highlighted by a dominant 4-0 victory over Mozambique in the Round of 16.

Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has downplayed expectations, stressing the need for focus on the immediate task.

“I only think about Marrakech. There is a game to play. After that, we can think about the next step,” Chelle said.
“The story starts in Marrakech. Training, focus and the next game – that is all that matters now.”

Despite reports of unpaid bonuses and minor disagreements within the camp, players have insisted that unity remains intact.

On the pitch, Nigeria have looked rejuvenated, blending pace, power and discipline under Chelle’s pragmatic approach.

Ademola Lookman has been Nigeria’s standout performer, with three goals and five assists, making him the tournament’s most productive player so far.

Victor Osimhen has also netted three goals and is now just three shy of Nigeria’s all-time AFCON scoring record of 37 goals.

Akor Adams added attacking depth with his first AFCON goal against Mozambique, further strengthening Nigeria’s forward options.

However, defensive lapses remain a concern, with the Super Eagles conceding four goals in four matches heading into their toughest test yet.

In midfield, Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi have driven Nigeria’s intensity, although Ndidi, Frank Onyeka and Calvin Bassey are all one booking away from suspension.

Historically, Nigeria and Algeria have met 21 times, with Nigeria winning nine matches, Algeria seven, and five ending in draws.

Algeria famously eliminated Nigeria 2-1 in the semi-finals of the 2019 AFCON, sealed by a dramatic stoppage-time free-kick from Riyad Mahrez.

The Desert Warriors are seeking redemption after disappointing group-stage exits at the last two AFCON tournaments.

Their coach, Vladimir Petković, views reaching the quarter-finals as only the foundation of a rebuilding process.

“Qualifying was important, but it is the minimum,” Petković said. “Now our focus is Nigeria. Rebuilding means responsibility, courage and unity.”

Under Petković, Algeria have won 19 of their last 24 matches, signalling steady recovery since their 2019 triumph.

He added: “I never promise trophies. What I promise is pride, courage and unity. Without unity, success is impossible.”

Algeria edged DR Congo 1-0 after extra time in the Round of 16, with Adil Boulbina scoring the decisive goal in the 119th minute.

Defensive discipline has defined their campaign, with just one goal conceded in four matches, while goalkeeper Luca Zidane has been in impressive form.

Captain Riyad Mahrez remains influential at 34, scoring three goals and guiding a squad that blends experience with youthful energy.

Mahrez expects a close contest. “Nigeria? We know them well. The match won’t be easy. Anything is possible,” he said.

Nigeria have reached the AFCON semi-finals a joint-record 16 times and often thrive under intense pressure.

Should the Super Eagles progress, they will face either hosts Morocco or Cameroon, rekindling memories of the historic 1988 AFCON.

Thirty-eight years ago in Rabat, Nigeria edged Algeria on penalties before losing a controversial final to Cameroon.

On Saturday in Marrakech, history, ambition and belief collide once again as Nigeria seek another step toward glory and Algeria chase redemption.
