Sokoto Government Commends Successful Cultivation on Reclaimed BUA Cement Farmland

The Sokoto State Government on Wednesday marked the successful cultivation of reclaimed farmland previously used by BUA Cement for mining operations in the state.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Sokoto Agriculture and Rural Development Project (SADP) in partnership with BUA Cement Plc, aims to strengthen agricultural productivity and improve livelihoods in host communities.

At the ceremony, SADP Project Manager, Malam Abubakar Dan-Maliki, said the project aligns with Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s vision of fostering sustainable development and restoring citizens’ confidence in agriculture.

“This land was once a mining site under BUA Cement, but today it has been revitalised and made fertile again for farming,” Dan-Maliki noted.

He explained that the land underwent clearing, soil testing, and cultivation with different crops, including maize, millet, guinea corn, groundnut, beans, and soya beans, all of which recorded encouraging yields despite the late planting season.

According to him, the reclaimed one-hectare plot has proven that modern soil management techniques can restore the agricultural potential of post-mining lands.

Dan-Maliki commended BUA Cement for sponsoring the project and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to sustaining the partnership to enhance community welfare and food security.

In his remarks, BUA Cement representative, Mr. Rabiu Maska, described the development as a key milestone in the company’s drive to convert reclaimed mining lands into productive assets for surrounding communities.

“This marks the first time we are realising our plan to make reclaimed mining sites useful for the people. We assure our host communities that every piece of land used by BUA will be restored for beneficial purposes,” Maska said.

He added that BUA has introduced additional empowerment initiatives—particularly for women and youths—to support community development beyond agriculture.

Maska also appreciated the collaboration with SADP and acknowledged the Sokoto State Government’s ongoing efforts to improve the well-being of its citizens.

The Vice Chairman of Wamakko Local Government Area, Alhaji Abu Gosha, lauded BUA Cement’s consistent contributions to community growth and urged the company to continue supporting socio-economic development initiatives.
