Shaibu Hails Edo Queens’ NWFL Victory as Reward for Hard Work

Abuja, June 15, 2026 – Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Philip Shaibu, has praised Edo Queens for securing the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership title, describing the feat as a reflection of the team’s resilience, commitment and outstanding performance throughout the season.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Ben Ogbemudia, Shaibu said the championship victory was well-earned, noting that the players and coaching crew demonstrated remarkable determination and consistency in their quest for success.

According to him, the triumph further highlights the steady growth of women’s football in Nigeria and has brought honour to Edo State as well as the nation.

He stated that the club’s achievement underscores the value of continuous investment in sports development, youth empowerment and talent cultivation across the country.

Shaibu added that the accomplishment would motivate aspiring female athletes to strive for excellence and pursue careers in sports with greater confidence.

The NIS chief also lauded the Edo State Government for its sustained support for sports, stressing that the state has continued to distinguish itself through notable successes in different sporting events.

He expressed optimism that the Benin City-based side would perform creditably in continental competitions and urged the players to remain focused as they prepare to face some of Africa’s leading clubs.

Shaibu further assured the team of the goodwill and backing of sports stakeholders and Nigerians, expressing hope that they would achieve greater milestones and bring more honours to the country in future international engagements.
