Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has expressed support for his deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, describing him as capable, experienced, and well-positioned for higher responsibility.
The governor’s remarks followed a meeting at the State House where Hamzat, accompanied by a delegation of party leaders, senior government officials, former lawmakers, ministers, and diplomats, formally informed him of his political ambition.
The gathering was seen as an early indication of succession alignment within the administration, drawing backing from several political stakeholders who attended the consultation.
Sanwo-Olu said the meeting was cordial and consultative, noting that those present expressed confidence in Hamzat’s readiness to lead if given the opportunity.
He explained that the discussions ended with a general consensus among attendees that the deputy governor possesses the experience and preparation required for the role.
The governor commended Hamzat’s knowledge of governance, stating that he has played an active role in policy development and administration since the beginning of their tenure.
According to him, the deputy governor has been deeply involved in the workings of government and understands its operations across various levels.
Sanwo-Olu also praised Hamzat’s personal qualities, highlighting his humility, loyalty, discipline, and consistent support throughout their years of collaboration.
He said the formal notification of Hamzat’s intention was received with appreciation, describing it as a respectful and commendable gesture.
The governor also acknowledged the influence of President Bola Tinubu in their political journey, noting that their partnership was built on a long-standing vision.
He added that Hamzat has served as a full partner in governance rather than just a deputy, contributing actively to the administration’s direction.
Sanwo-Olu expressed optimism about his deputy’s prospects and encouraged party members and residents to support him as discussions around succession progress.
