Political parties planning campaign activities in Oriade Local Government Area of Osun State have been advised to suspend their scheduled rallies following concerns over a potential security threat in the area.
The directive was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday in Osogbo by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi.
According to Ojelabi, political parties, candidates and their supporters should reschedule rallies, processions, campaigns and other political gatherings earlier slated for Wednesday to a later date.
He explained that the advisory followed intelligence reports and an assessment of the prevailing security situation within the local government area.
“The command advises all political parties, candidates, supporters and relevant stakeholders to shift their planned political activities in Oriade Local Government Area to another date due to security considerations,” he stated.
Ojelabi noted that the decision was also influenced by the inability of key political actors to reach a common understanding despite efforts by the police to facilitate dialogue.
He revealed that a peace meeting convened by the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, involving the affected political parties, could not take place as planned.
The police spokesperson said the action was intended to avert any possible breakdown of law and order and to protect residents and their property from harm.
He urged political parties, their followers and members of the public to comply with the directive in the interest of maintaining peace and stability in the area.
Ojelabi further assured residents that the command remained committed to preserving public safety and ensuring a secure environment for all. He also called on citizens to remain peaceful, law-abiding and supportive of security efforts aimed at preventing unrest.
