The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Lagos State Chapter, on Friday assured residents of an adequate supply of chicken and eggs at reduced prices during the Yuletide season.
Mr. Mojeed Iyiola, Chairman of Lagos State PAN, attributed the availability and price drop to the state government’s intervention in the sector.
Through the ‘Ounje Eko’ Farmers Subsidy Programme, the Lagos State Government provided discounted poultry feeds ahead of the Christmas celebration, incentivising farmers to increase their stock.
“This motivated us to ensure enough chicken and eggs are available. There will be more than enough products to sell, even at lower prices than last year,” Iyiola said.
He added that PAN received a 25% discount on feeds, which would be reflected in consumer prices.
In 2024, old layer birds sold for N16,000 to N20,000 per bird, but this Yuletide, farmers will sell between N8,000 and N10,000 per bird, depending on size. Egg prices have also dropped, now ranging from N5,100 to N5,300 at the farm gate.
Iyiola said the reduced prices are a way of reciprocating the government’s support while ensuring residents have access to affordable poultry products this festive season.
