Operation Sweep: Police Commissioner Reiterates Commitment to Flush Out Criminal Elements in FCT

Abuja, May 15, 2026 The joint security initiative known as Operation Sweep FCT has reiterated its resolve to intensify coordinated operations aimed at eliminating criminal activity within the Federal Capital Territory and its surrounding communities.

The Commissioner of Police in the FCT, Ahmed Sanusi, made this known in Abuja following the reactivation of the exercise on Friday.

He said the renewed security drive was prompted by emerging threats in and around the capital, including kidnapping, armed robbery and banditry.

Sanusi stressed that the operation is not directed at any ethnic, religious or social group, but strictly at criminal elements.

According to him, “crime has no identity,” adding that the mandate of the task force is to confront criminality in all its forms.

He explained that the operation is being jointly carried out by personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, the military, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Federal Road Safety Corps.

Other participating agencies include the FCT Directorate of Road Transport Services, Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Customs Service and other relevant security bodies operating in the territory.

Sanusi said the inter-agency collaboration reflects a stronger commitment to improving security and maintaining peace in the nation’s capital.

He assured residents that operatives would conduct their duties professionally and avoid any form of harassment or intimidation of law-abiding citizens.

The police commissioner also called on residents, journalists and international partners to support the operation by providing credible intelligence to help dismantle criminal networks.

He added that the exercise would continue for as long as necessary, noting that no part of the FCT would be left uncovered.

Also speaking, the Director of the FCTA Security Services Department, Adamu Gwary, said the administration fully supports the renewed security operation.

Gwary said the initiative is aimed at strengthening safety and stability ahead of increased political activities leading up to the 2027 general elections and upcoming festive celebrations.

He added that beyond political considerations, the operation is designed to ensure that the FCT remains safe and free from criminal activities.

The Operation Sweep FCT initiative was originally reactivated in November 2025 by the FCT Security Committee to address kidnapping, banditry and other rising security concerns across the territory.
