NUJ FCT Urges Stronger Collaboration to Remove Barriers to Women’s Progress

The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has called for stronger collaboration between government and stakeholders to dismantle barriers hindering women’s participation and advancement across sectors in Nigeria’s development.

Chairman of the council, Grace Ike, made the call in a statement issued to journalists on Sunday in Abuja to commemorate the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration.

The theme for the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration is “Give to Gain,” highlighting the importance of investing in women’s advancement and opportunities for sustainable development.

Ike said empowering women produced far-reaching benefits, noting that inclusive newsrooms encouraged richer storytelling, strengthened governance, promoted fairness in representation and helped build more equitable societies.

She observed that women in journalism continued to demonstrate resilience, professionalism and dedication to truth despite various challenges, contributing significantly to public service and the strengthening of democratic values.

According to her, female journalists are breaking new ground by covering difficult beats, shaping public discourse and mentoring younger colleagues, proving that professional excellence knows no gender.

“Today, as the world marks International Women’s Day, I join millions across the globe in celebrating the strength, resilience, brilliance and boundless potential of women everywhere,” she said.

“The 2026 theme, ‘Give to Gain,’ reminds us that when we intentionally invest in women through education, mentorship, opportunities and resources, we strengthen families, communities, institutions and nations.”

She said the celebration should go beyond recognition and translate into action through mentoring young female journalists, creating safe workplaces, providing leadership opportunities and ensuring women’s voices are heard.

“These are the investments that will yield the greatest returns for journalism and society. The United Nations theme, ‘Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls,’ reinforces our collective responsibility,” she added.

Ike said governments, institutions, media organisations and communities must work together to remove barriers hindering women’s progress and ensure equal opportunities for women and girls.

She also celebrated women within the NUJ FCT media community and across Nigeria whose dedication and achievements continue to inspire a new generation.

Ike noted that as the first female chairperson of the NUJ FCT Council, her leadership journey reflected what became possible when women were given opportunities to lead and excel in their professions.

“Let us recommit to giving more opportunities, support, mentorship and recognition to women because when women rise, journalism thrives, communities prosper and our nation grows stronger,” she said.
