NOA Marks Suicide Prevention Day with Public Awareness Campaign

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged Nigerians to break the stigma around mental health and unite in efforts to prevent suicide.

Speaking in Dutse on Wednesday, the Jigawa State Director of NOA, Mr. Ahmad Tijjani, delivered a message to mark the 2025 World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD). He emphasized the importance of raising awareness and promoting open conversations about suicide.

World Suicide Prevention Day, observed globally on September 10, highlights the need for stronger public awareness of suicidal behaviors, greater investment in mental health, and the fight against stigma.

Tijjani explained that suicide claims over 720,000 lives annually across the world, leaving families and communities devastated. He stressed that such tragedies can be prevented through compassion, understanding, and timely support.

“Suicide is preventable. We must change the narrative by breaking myths and stigma. A simple check-in with a loved one can make all the difference,” he said.

He urged Nigerians to listen with empathy, avoid judgment, and encourage those struggling to seek professional help from doctors, counselors, or support hotlines.

“World Suicide Prevention Day is not only about remembering those we have lost but also about offering hope. Together, let’s show that every life matters,” Tijjani added.
