Port Harcourt, June 4, 2026 – Government Comprehensive Secondary School (GCSS), Borikiri, Port Harcourt, has emerged as the overall winner of the 2026 Nigeria LNG Science Competition after outperforming 140 secondary schools across Rivers State.
The result was announced on Thursday in Port Harcourt by NLNG’s Manager of Corporate Communication and Public Affairs, Mrs Anne-Marie Palmer-Ikuku.
She said the competition brought together students from various schools across the state to showcase their knowledge, creativity, and problem-solving abilities in science and technology.
According to her, the initiative is aimed at strengthening Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education while encouraging healthy academic competition among students.
She disclosed that the competition began with 140 participating schools, out of which seven advanced to the final stage.
In addition, 42 schools participated in the Science Project Exhibition category, with 11 progressing to the finals.
Palmer-Ikuku noted that GCSS Borikiri stood out through its strong performance, accuracy, composure, and solid understanding of science concepts across all stages of the contest.
She explained that the competition featured three segments: the championship round, the science project exhibition, and the grand finale.
According to her, Government Girls Secondary School, Orominieke, won the Science Project Exhibition category, while Oginigba Comprehensive Secondary School placed second, and Government Girls Secondary School, Finima-Bonny, came third.
Speaking at the grand finale, NLNG’s General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, Dr Sophia Horsfall, described the competition as an investment in the future of Nigerian youths.
She said the programme provides a platform for innovation-driven learning and promotes a sustainable future through science education.
Horsfall added that the competition has grown into a platform that strengthens students’ understanding of Mathematics, ICT, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
She noted that the goal is to move beyond classroom theory and encourage critical thinking and innovation needed to solve real-world problems.
She reaffirmed NLNG’s commitment to improving education quality and promoting interest in STEM-related fields among young learners.
According to her, the future depends on young people who can think creatively, innovate, and address societal challenges.
Horsfall added that the competition was organised in collaboration with the Rivers State Ministry of Education, the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (Rivers State chapter), and Dragnet Solutions Limited.
Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Mr Peters Nwogbo, also commended the initiative, saying education remains the foundation for scientific innovation and national development.
He said the state government is focused on improving learning infrastructure, strengthening teacher capacity, and advancing STEM education.
He encouraged participating students to remain committed to excellence, noting that their involvement already sets them apart.
Nwogbo further explained that the introduction of the Science Project Exhibition has expanded opportunities for students to develop practical solutions to scientific and environmental challenges.
