Abuja, June 3, 2026 – The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has cautioned Nigerians against a fraudulent online platform being promoted on social media as a free service for correcting National Identification Number (NIN) records.
The warning was issued in a public notice shared on the commission’s official X account on Tuesday.
According to NIMC, the message and the links attached to it are part of a phishing operation designed to obtain personal information from unsuspecting individuals.
The commission advised members of the public not to engage with the post or click on any links claiming to offer free NIN data modification services.
It stressed that all requests for updates, corrections or modifications to NIN records should only be processed through its authorised self-service platform available on the official NIMC portal.
NIMC also urged Nigerians to obtain information on enrolment, record updates and other identity management services solely from its verified communication channels.
The commission clarified that the portal currently being circulated online is not affiliated with NIMC and should be treated as fraudulent.
It further assured citizens that the National Identity Database remains secure and protected from unauthorised access.
While reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding personal identity information, NIMC called on the public to remain vigilant online and promptly report any suspicious websites, messages or activities falsely claiming to represent the commission to the relevant authorities.
