The Headquarters of Operation HADIN KAI has reassured residents of Nigeria’s North-East region of enhanced security arrangements ahead of the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebrations scheduled for Wednesday.
In a security advisory released by the Theatre Command’s spokesperson, Lt.-Col. Sani Uba, the military said troops had been deployed to sensitive and high-risk locations across the region to maintain peace during the festivities.
While congratulating Muslim faithful on the occasion, the command warned that intelligence reports suggested that remnants of Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province could attempt to target civilians during the celebration period.
According to the statement, the terrorists may resort to the use of suicide bombers and improvised explosive devices, especially in crowded public areas.
The military, however, said it had already anticipated such threats and put preventive measures in place to forestall any security breach.
It explained that intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations had been intensified, while patrol activities were being strengthened in collaboration with other security agencies, the Civilian Joint Task Force and local vigilance groups.
Residents were advised to remain alert throughout the festive period and avoid actions that could expose them to danger.
The command also encouraged worshippers to hold prayers and celebrations close to their neighbourhoods and limit attendance at crowded gatherings where possible.
Members of the public were urged to pay attention to suspicious movements or objects in busy places such as markets, motor parks, banks and prayer grounds, and immediately report any concerns to security operatives.
The statement further appealed to residents to cooperate with security personnel during stop-and-search operations and avoid circulating unverified information capable of causing panic.
Traditional rulers, religious leaders, media organisations and community stakeholders were also called upon to support security efforts by providing timely and credible information to authorities.
The military reaffirmed its determination to prevent terrorist activities and ensure that communities across the North-East celebrate the Eid season peacefully and without disruption.
