NDA Regular Course 37 Alumni Celebrate 40 Years of Service and Brotherhood

Retired officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces have been encouraged to remain steadfast, loyal, and committed to the nation’s unity, security, and development, even after leaving active service.

This call was made during the 40th anniversary celebration of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Regular Course 37 Alumni Association, held at a dinner in Abuja.

The event brought together retired senior officers from the Army, Navy, and Air Force who entered the NDA as cadets in 1985 and were commissioned in 1989.

Tributes to Service and Patriotism

Retired Major-General Paul Tarfa, Chairman of the North-East Development Commission and former NDA Commandant, praised members of Course 37 for their discipline, courage, and professionalism throughout their military careers.

Tarfa, who welcomed the Course 37 cadets into the Academy four decades ago, said they had served gallantly and made the nation proud. He urged them to continue promoting unity and patriotism among retired personnel, stressing that a united front among veterans would further strengthen Nigeria.

“When you joined the military, you knew the risks but chose honour. Congratulations for serving with distinction,” he said.

Reflecting on his time as Commandant, Tarfa described himself as one of the “luckiest” officers to have led the NDA, noting that the introduction of the degree-awarding programme in 1985 during his tenure marked a significant turning point in military education.

Celebrating Excellence and Legacy

Former Minister of Defence and ex-NDA Commandant, retired Major-General Bashir Magashi, also congratulated the alumni for maintaining their bond and making lasting contributions to national defence and peace.

He described the 40th anniversary as a celebration of endurance, loyalty, and professional excellence that has strengthened the armed forces and upheld national integrity.

“From platoon commanders to Chief of Army Staff, your service has enriched the history and professionalism of the Nigerian Armed Forces. Your courage and leadership continue to inspire future generations,” he said.

Reunion of a Distinguished Class

In his welcome address, Alumni Association President, retired Rear Admiral Akinga Ayafa, said the reunion was a moment for gratitude, reflection, and renewed commitment to serving the nation beyond active duty.

He recalled the class’s early days at the Academy—the rigorous drills, discipline, and academic challenges that shaped their character. Course 37 was the first to complete the degree-awarding programme from start to finish, marking a historic achievement for the NDA.

Ayafa paid tribute to Tarfa for his visionary leadership and acknowledged the instructors and lecturers who guided their development.

He highlighted that members of Course 37 went on to occupy prominent roles, including Chief of Army Staff, Commandants, Vice Chancellors, Directors-General, and leaders in diplomacy, academia, and the private sector.

The course has also given back to the NDA through various projects, including the construction of a squash court and provision of a ceremonial horse, while supporting the families of fallen colleagues.

Honouring Fallen Heroes and Family Support

A special tribute was held for deceased members of the course, described as “brothers” whose sacrifices remain a lasting bond of duty and service.

“Though we no longer wear the uniform, our call to serve has not ended,” Ayafa said. “We remain a brotherhood forged in discipline and patriotism, ready to contribute to nation-building and mentorship. No matter how high we rose, we all began as drenched cadets at the Academy gates — a reminder that greatness often springs from humble beginnings.”

He also expressed appreciation to their wives, affectionately known as the “37RC Excellent Queens,” for their unwavering support throughout years of deployment and service.

A Night of Celebration

The dinner was attended by former Chiefs of Defence Staff, Service Chiefs, senior military officers, and their families. The evening featured tributes, awards, and cultural performances celebrating 40 years of friendship, shared sacrifice, and enduring service to the nation.
