NCF, UNDP–GEF boost livelihoods of 180 women and youths in Yobe State

The Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), in partnership with the UNDP–Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF–SGP) Nigeria, has conducted a two-day capacity-building workshop for women and youths in Yobe State aimed at promoting sustainable livelihoods and environmental resilience.

Mr. Harry Hanson, NCF Zonal Officer and Project Coordinator, revealed this on Thursday in Nguru, noting that the training benefited 130 women and 50 youths from the Maja-Kura community.

He explained that the programme was implemented under the “Sustainable Farmers-Led Adaptation Strategy (SFLAS) to Climate Change” project, designed to strengthen rural communities’ capacity to adapt to the effects of climate change.

According to Hanson, the initiative is part of the project’s livelihood empowerment component, focused on equipping participants with practical skills that enhance income generation while encouraging environmentally responsible practices.

Participants received hands-on training in soybean processing for soy cake and soy milk production, converting crop residues into livestock feed, and packaging agricultural products to boost market value.

“The training also aims to reduce the shortage of animal feed during the dry season and open new income opportunities for women and young people in Nguru,” Hanson said.

He added that trainees were also taught how to produce fuel-efficient stoves, a strategy to reduce dependence on firewood, mitigate deforestation, and promote clean energy adoption in the community.

Representing the beneficiaries, Malam Lawan Abdu from the Nguru Emirate Council praised the NCF and GEF–SGP Nigeria for implementing what he described as a transformative and practical project.
