NBRDA Reassures Nigerians on Safety of Genetically Modified Organisms

The National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA) has assured Nigerians that Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are safe for human health and the environment.

Director-General of the agency, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, gave the assurance in Abuja on Monday, stressing that ongoing concerns about GMOs are largely driven by misinformation.

He explained that the agency remains committed to educating the public through evidence-based advocacy, stakeholder engagement, and research-backed sensitisation efforts.

“Our top priority is the well-being of Nigerians. We will never compromise public health or safety in the pursuit of innovation,” Mustapha said.

He noted that GMOs are globally recognised as safe and are strictly regulated in Nigeria. According to him, no GMO product is allowed into circulation without approval from the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), which conducts comprehensive risk assessments before granting clearance.

Mustapha added that the NBRDA is intensifying efforts to raise awareness among farmers, policymakers, scientists, civil society, and young people. These initiatives include training sessions, community outreach, open forums, and field demonstrations designed to counter misinformation and build public trust in biotechnology.

He further highlighted that the agency’s mandate covers innovative research in agriculture, health, industry, and the environment, all geared towards advancing national development while safeguarding citizens.
