Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has commended President Bola Tinubu for ending decades of risky river crossings and costly air travel to Bonny Island, Rivers State.
Wike made the remarks during a “thank you” visit to Bonny Local Government Area on Thursday, celebrating the partial opening of the 37.8 km Bodo-Bonny Road, which now provides the first-ever land connection to the major oil and gas hub.
He described the road as a long-delayed project that had suffered repeated political setbacks until the Tinubu administration completed it, and praised the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, for bringing the project to fruition.
“Before, each time we wanted to come to Bonny, we would worry about the tide. Even by helicopter, I would look at the ocean and pray to return safely. Today, God has made this possible,” Wike said.
He encouraged the people to remain united despite political disagreements, noting that cohesion among leaders would attract more benefits for Bonny residents.
Representatives and local leaders, including Cyril Heart of Degema-Bonny Federal Constituency and Bonny LGA Chairman Abinye Pepple, lauded Wike for his contributions to women inclusion in governance and for delivering numerous projects to the area.
Pepple highlighted the historic significance of the road, saying, “For the first time in history, our people can drive from Bonny to Port Harcourt. This is an overwhelming experience,” and pledged support for Tinubu in 2027.
