Gov. Nasir Idris of Kebbi has provided 340 laptops to indigenes of the state pursuing various academic programmes in India.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Saturday in Birnin Kebbi by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Malam Yahaya Sarki.
According to the statement, the presentation was held on Friday at Swami Vivekanand Subharti University, Meerut, India, during a colourful ceremony.
Sarki explained that the governor, represented by his Special Adviser on Special Duties, Alhaji Shafiu Zauro, said the support was part of government’s drive to equip students with tools needed to improve their studies.
He added that the intervention reflects the governor’s resolve to motivate and encourage Kebbi students studying abroad.
Sarki recalled that Idris had already cleared tuition and scholarship fees for students in both local and foreign institutions.
He said as a teacher and former union leader, it was natural for the governor to be committed to reforming education in Kebbi.
The adviser quoted the governor as charging the students to excel in their studies and uphold moral values as representatives of Kebbi and Nigeria.
The management of the Indian university was said to have lauded the gesture, praising Idris for consistently prioritising the welfare of Kebbi students.
Since assuming office in 2023, the governor has sponsored the payment of tuition and scholarships for students at home and abroad.
He has also settled WAEC registration fees for secondary school students across Kebbi, in what the government described as part of wider education reforms.
