Mandilas Market Fire: Four Buildings, 200 Shops Destroyed

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that four buildings, comprising around 200 shops, were destroyed in the fire outbreak that swept through parts of Mandilas Market on Lagos Island.

The incident, which began on the evening of Tuesday, September 16, and continued into Wednesday, was traced to a faulty changeover switch in one of the affected buildings. The fire quickly spread to nearby structures, fueled by highly flammable goods such as clothing, footwear, and plastics.

In a statement released via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, NEMA said emergency responders, including the Federal Fire Service, Lagos State Fire Service, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency Response Unit, and other partners, were deployed immediately to the scene. Their coordinated efforts contained the blaze and prevented further destruction.

“Despite the intensity of the inferno, responders worked through the night until the fire was completely extinguished,” the agency stated. It confirmed that four buildings housing about 200 shops were destroyed, while one person was treated for smoke inhalation at a nearby health facility.

Security personnel from the Nigeria Police Force were also present to maintain order, enforce safety measures, and protect traders from looting.

NEMA’s Lagos Operations Head commended the swift collaboration among all responding agencies and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to supporting affected traders. He stressed the need for improved fire safety in crowded commercial hubs such as Lagos Island.

“This incident highlights the urgent need for heightened precautions in markets where combustible items are stored. NEMA will continue working with stakeholders to safeguard lives, property, and livelihoods,” the official added.
