Man Arraigned in Lagos Court Over Alleged N1.2m Theft

A 32-year-old man, Godwin Udoka, was on Monday brought before a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Badagry, Lagos State, over allegations of stealing items valued at N1.2 million.

Udoka, whose residential address was not disclosed, is facing charges of theft and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

During the proceedings, the prosecutor, Insp. Friday Maneh, told the court that the alleged offences occurred on March 23 at about 1:30 p.m. in the Olorunsogo area of Ijanikin, Lagos.

Maneh alleged that the defendant unlawfully took goods belonging to FG Motors Nigeria Limited, estimated at N1.2 million.

He further told the court that Udoka acted in a manner capable of disturbing public peace by abandoning a company-owned trailer.

According to the prosecutor, the defendant was apprehended by members of the public and subsequently handed over to the police.

The alleged offences are said to violate Sections 168 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate, A.J. Aina, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like amount. He also stipulated that one of the sureties must be a company director.

The case was adjourned until May 11 for further mention.
