Makinde confirms killing of teacher, arrest of six suspects in Oyo school abduction case

Ibadan, May 18, 2026 Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has confirmed the killing of a teacher and the arrest of six suspects in connection with the abduction of school staff in the Ahoro-Esinele community of the state.

The confirmation was contained in a statement issued in Ibadan on Monday by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Dr Suleimon Olanrewaju.

Makinde expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and assured that government would deploy both security operations and non-violent strategies to secure the release of other victims still in captivity.

He also sympathised with families of security personnel involved in the rescue mission, including members of the military, the Amotekun Corps and local vigilantes, who reportedly lost their lives after encountering explosive devices planted by the kidnappers.

According to him, injured operatives are responding to treatment, while the state government will ensure all medical expenses are fully covered.

The governor appealed for calm and patience from relatives of the victims and religious leaders, assuring them that efforts were ongoing to secure their safe return.

He noted that seven teachers were initially abducted, adding that intelligence reports confirmed the killing of a mathematics teacher by the abductors.

Makinde said security agencies have recorded progress in the operation, disclosing that six suspects were arrested within the affected community.

He said some of those arrested were suspected informants and logistical support aides to the kidnappers, while three other persons of interest were also apprehended by another security formation in the state.

The governor stressed the importance of collaboration with neighbouring states to address cross-border criminal movement.

He warned that increased military pressure in some northern regions could push criminal elements southward, requiring stronger regional coordination.

Makinde added that discussions were ongoing with other state governments to strengthen joint security responses and prevent further attacks.

He further assured residents that updates on rescue efforts would be provided regularly as operations continue.
