Ademola Lookman delivered a decisive moment on Tuesday night, scoring the goal that sent Atlético Madrid into the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League after a tense clash with FC Barcelona.
The Spanish side progressed with a 3-2 aggregate victory, marking their first appearance at this stage of the competition since the 2016/2017 campaign.
Having built a 2-0 advantage in the first leg, Atlético saw their lead wiped out early in the return fixture as Barcelona struck twice within the opening 25 minutes through Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres.
However, Atlético responded with a well-worked move that ended with Lookman calmly finding the net in the 31st minute, restoring their aggregate edge and steadying the team after Barcelona’s fast start.
The second half saw Barcelona struggle to create clear chances, even after introducing attacking options like Marcus Rashford and Robert Lewandowski.
Any lingering hopes of a comeback faded late in the match when Eric García was shown a red card for bringing down Alexander Sørloth as the last defender.
Atlético Madrid will now turn their attention to the semi-finals, where they are set to meet either Arsenal or Sporting CP, with the next round of matches scheduled for the end of April.
