Legendary American Band Shalamar Thrills Fans at Abuja Concert

Legendary Grammy-winning American R&B vocal group, Shalamar, is set to captivate fans—especially lovers of old-school music—at a landmark concert in Abuja on October 4. The event, taking place at the International Conference Centre, coincides with Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day celebrations.

The show is being promoted by iCreate Africa in partnership with First Culture Ltd. With a timeless catalogue of hits such as A Night to Remember and I Can Make You Feel Good, Shalamar promises an unforgettable night of nostalgia and energy.

Speaking on the upcoming concert, Bright Jaja, CEO of iCreate Africa, said:

“Abuja, get ready — the wait is finally over. The music that shaped a generation is coming back home. Shalamar will deliver all their classics live, backed by a powerful 7-piece band.”

Tickets for the highly anticipated event are already available at Jabi Boat Club and Dunes Supermarket, Abuja.

Tunde Babalola, Creative Director of First Culture, described the concert as more than just a performance:

“This is a musical bridge between the past and the present. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience Shalamar live — a performance designed to spark nostalgia, excitement, and goosebumps.”

In a video message to their Nigerian fans, Howard Hewett, Carolyn Griffey, and Jeffrey Daniel expressed excitement about returning to Nigeria. Daniel, widely recognized as the pioneer of the iconic backslide dance move (later renamed the Moonwalk), assured fans that the Abuja show will truly be “a night to remember.”

Shalamar is celebrated worldwide as one of the greatest funk and soul groups of their era, with over 25 million records sold. Known for their pioneering role in popularizing body-popping and their electrifying live shows, the reformed trio has continued to perform globally since 2001.

Some of their timeless hits include Friends, Make That Move, There It Is, Sweeter As the Days Go By, and I Owe You One.

This Abuja performance comes more than four decades after Shalamar’s legendary sold-out shows in Nigeria in 1982, when they performed at the National Arts Theatre, Lagos, as well as at the University of Lagos, University of Ibadan, and University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University).

As Nigeria marks 65 years of independence, Shalamar’s return promises a celebration of music, culture, and heritage—bringing together generations of fans for an extraordinary night of rhythm, soul, and nostalgia.
